Position Title: Heavy Equipment Operator

Department:  Plant Operations

Term of Assignment: Continuing

Term End Date, If Applicable:             

FLSA Status:   Non-Exempt = overtime eligible

Work Schedule: 5 month position (November-March); variable schedule depending on weather conditions;
typical schedule will be 12:00 pm to 8:00 pm

Salary: Hourly rate: $22.67 starting; $23.81 working

Travel: Less than 10%

Brief Statement of Duties

Brief Statement of Duties: Under general supervision, engage in snow plowing and ice control activities, vehicle/equipment operation and maintain outdoor facilities, streets, parking lots, sidewalks and grounds.

Minimum Qualifications

Required Education: High School Graduation or Equivalent

Discipline/Degree Area: 

Required Specialized Training/Certifications:  Must possess a valid Michigan CDL Category B with Air Brakes.

Required Minimum Work Experience:  Two years of full-time experience in operating various types of heavy equipment such as heavy trucks and front end loaders
One year of commercial snow plowing experience.
Must successfully pass Michigan Department of Transportation physical.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, or Attributes Required for Satisfactory Performance of the Position Duties: 

KNOWLEDGE:
General knowledge of grounds maintenance including heavy equipment operation, snow removal and ice control.
Ability to pass relevant oral, written or performance testing.

SKILLS:
Efficient heavy equipment operation and precision control.
The ability to operate and quickly and repeatedly adjust the controls of a machine or a vehicle to exact positions.
Physical capability to perform all duties and responsibilities of the position with or without reasonable accommodations.
Strong oral communication skills to effectively deal with a broad variety of people.
Excellent critical thinking skills and good judgment; able to effectively analyze situations and solve problems.
Effective interpersonal skills; able to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Completion of NMU HEO Training Program.
Completion of commercial driver's school.
