Position Title: Admissions Counselor/Senior Admissions Counselor/Assistant Director-Admissions

Department:  Admissions

Term of Assignment: Continuing

Term End Date, If Applicable:             

FLSA Status:   Exempt = not eligible for overtime

Work Schedule: This position manages a lower Michigan recruitment territory and is based remotely within a reasonable driving distance from the Ann Arbor area. Initial training will be provided at the NMU campus in Marquette, Michigan, but this is a remote position. Remote staff spend time on campus approximately 4 times per year for 2-5 days.

Traditionally Monday-Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm with some evening and weekend work required. Requires about 50% travel (some overnight).

One position is available with the potential to be filed at any of the listed levels consistent with the selected applicant's experience. Levels include: Admissions Counselor, Senior Admissions Counselor or Assistant Director of Admissions.

Salary: Targeted minimum salaries: $47,360 Admissions Counselor; $50,720 Senior Admissions Counselor; $54,000 Assistant Director-Admissions

Travel: 26-50%

Brief Statement of Duties

Brief Statement of Duties: Admissions Counselor and Senior Admissions Counselor:
Responsible for meeting enrollment goals of a recruitment region or specific population and/or participation/satisfaction goals of assigned programs/activities.

Assistant Director of Admissions:
Manage a recruitment region and/or specialized recruitment programs, oversee the operation of specialized functions with the Office, initiate new programs/services and assist the Director in a variety of areas.

Minimum Qualifications

Required Education: Bachelor's Degree

Discipline/Degree Area:  Related field

Required Specialized Training/Certifications:  Valid motor vehicle driver's license.

Required Minimum Work Experience:  Admissions Counselor:
Two years of student experience in college admissions or campus leadership positions or six months of professional experience in any of the following:
a. working with college students in a college/university setting;
b. working with high school students as a counselor, teacher, or college/career adviser;
c. working in public relations, marketing, relationship-based sales or corporate staff recruitment.

Senior Admissions Counselor:
One year of professional experience in college admissions and one year of professional experience in any one of the following:
a. working with college students in a college/university setting;
b. working with high school students as a counselor, teacher, or college/career adviser;
c. working in public relations, marketing, relationship-based sales or corporate staff recruitment.

Assistant Director-Admissions:
Two years of professional experience in college admissions and one year of experience in any of the following:
a. working with college students in a college/university setting;
b. working with high school students as a counselor, teacher, or college/career adviser;
c. working in public relations, marketing, relationship-based sales or corporate staff recruitment.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, or Attributes Required for Satisfactory Performance of the Position Duties: 

Admissions Counselor, Senior Admissions Counselor and Assistant Director of Admissions:
Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
Excellent oral and written communication and comprehension skills and interpersonal skills.
Social Perceptiveness-Being aware of others' reactions and understanding why they react as they do.

Admissions Counselor and Senior Admissions Counselor only:

Ability to work as part of an admissions team, working cooperatively with staff within the department, as well as with other departments.
Ability to synthesize large amounts of information and determine relevance for a specific audience.
Ability to apply university and department protocols to one's work.
Ability to tell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong in order to be able to anticipate the need for and plan solutions.

Admissions Counselor only:
Ability to acquire knowledge related to the college search process, university academic programs, services and policies; admissions policies and procedures.

Senior Admissions Counselor only:
Knowledge related to the college search process, university academic programs, services and policies; admissions policies and procedures.

Assistant Director of Admissions only:
Extensive knowledge related to the college search process, university academic programs, services and policies; broad and detailed understanding of admissions policies, procedures, and accepted admissions practices.
Working knowledge of student information systems, electronic communications and computer technologies and ability to learn new related technologies.
Knowledge of human behavior and performance; individual differences in ability, personality, and interests; and learning and motivation.
Knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, human resources modeling, leadership technique, and coordination of people and resources.
Ability to coordinate efforts and work as part of an admissions team, working cooperatively with staff within the department, as well as with other departments.
Ability to make decisions and problem-solve.
Demonstrated ability to operationalize recruitment strategies and meet recruitment goals.
Ability to serve in a mentoring role to junior staff.

Additional Desirable Qualifications

Additional Desirable Qualifications: 

Admissions Counselor, Senior Admissions Counselor and Assistant Director of Admissions:
Master's Degree in a related field.

Admissions Counselor only:
Understanding of and experience in using technology for sales, customer service, recruitment and/or admissions activities (e.g. reporting tools, student information systems, constituent relationship management systems, content management systems).
Demonstrated use of digital marketing media to include social media and emerging technologies.

Senior Admissions Counselor only:
Demonstrated success in using technology for enrollment activities (e.g., reporting tools, student information systems, constituent relationship management systems, content management systems).
Demonstrated use of digital marketing media to include social media and emerging technologies.

Assistant Director of Admissions only:
Experience in the following:
a. counseling college-bound students;
b. public relations/marketing, especially related to the teen/young adult market;
c. alumni relations or development work;
d. international student admissions or adult education experience;
e. budgeting;
f. student information systems, e.g., Ellucian/Banner;
g. electronic communications and computer technologies, e.g., web, e-mail marketing, print on demand, imaging, social media, content management systems, constituent relationship management systems.
