Brief Statement of Duties

Brief Statement of Duties: The Department of Earth, Environmental, and Geographical Sciences (EEGS) at Northern Michigan University (NMU) invites applications for a Tenure Track Assistant Professor of Atmospheric Science to begin in August 2026. We seek an applied atmospheric scientist who uses field-based, observational, or modeling approaches to address real-world environmental challenges such as climate resilience, severe weather, and natural hazards. Candidates who have teaching and research experience that integrates meteorological monitoring methods, quantitative analysis, and interdisciplinary collaboration are preferred. Applicants who can contribute to existing departmental strengths in earth and environmental science teaching, applied research, and sustainability are especially encouraged to apply. This is a campus based position. This position is not currently available for sponsorship. 

Minimum Qualifications

Required Education: Doctorate or equivalent terminal degree

Discipline/Degree Area:  Atmospheric Science, Meteorology, Geoscience, or a closely related field

Required Specialized Training/Certifications: 

Required Minimum Work Experience:  Required minimum qualifications include a Ph.D. degree in Atmospheric Science, Meteorology, Geoscience, or a closely related field granted by August 15, 2026 evidence of an active scholarly agenda, a publication record in atmospheric science, meteorology, climate resilience, or a closely related discipline, demonstrated university teaching experience with a strong commitment to high-quality undergraduate instruction and advising. Experience with applied research methods, including field-monitoring techniques or using observational atmospheric data is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, or Attributes Required for Satisfactory Performance of the Position Duties: 

We seek a candidate capable of teaching Weather and Climate (lecture and lab), Earth’s Climate: Past, Present, and Future (lecture), and Quantitative Methods (lecture). Additional courses the candidate may be required to teach include Natural Hazards, Geographic Information Systems, Energy and the Environment, or a graduate-level course in the candidate’s area of expertise. The successful applicant will demonstrate the ability to produce applied atmospheric science scholarship and contribute to collaborative research in areas such as natural hazards, climate resilience, and earth systems science.

Additional Desirable Qualifications: 

Experience securing external grants, leading field-based atmospheric monitoring or applied research activities, demonstrated excellence in undergraduate teaching, advising, and student engagement in research, interest in collaborative and interdisciplinary projects that examine human–environment interactions, resource management, or sustainability challenges, and experience integrating geographic information systems or remote sensing in atmospheric science research or instruction.
