Brief Statement of Duties: The English Department at Northern Michigan University invites applications for an Assistant Professor of English with emphasis in Linguistics and TESOL. Teaching a 3/3 load comprised of primarily undergraduate English content and pedagogy courses (e.g., History of the English Language, English Grammar and Usage, Second Language Acquisition, TESOL Methods and Materials, etc.). Some teaching of related graduate courses is anticipated. Maintain an active research agenda within the discipline of Linguistics and TESOL, and contribute to advising and service to the department and university.
The English Department, with approximately 70 members, including full-time, contingent, adjunct, and graduate teaching assistants, is housed in the College of Arts and Sciences. The department offers a BA, BS, MA, and MFA, as well as a Graduate Certificate in TESOL. This is a three-year term, campus-based position at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin in August 2026. This position is not currently available for sponsorship.
Required Education: Doctorate or equivalent terminal degree
Discipline/Degree Area: A Doctorate in Linguistics, English, or English Studies
Required Specialized Training/Certifications:
Required Minimum Work Experience: At least three years of successful teaching at the college or university level (may include graduate teaching assistant positions).
Evidence of strong scholarship or scholarly potential in English with emphasis in Linguistics and TESOL or a closely related field.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, or Attributes Required for Satisfactory Performance of the Position Duties:
Ability to work collaboratively and communicate effectively.
Commitment to learners of all abilities and backgrounds.
Ability to demonstrate commitment to innovative and effective pedagogies.
Experience with integrating technology, digital resources, and learning management systems into one's pedagogy.
Additional Desirable Qualifications:
Evidence of teaching excellence in English courses at the college or university level.
Experience teaching courses (undergraduate or graduate) in linguistics, second language acquisition, TESOL, literacy, or sub-fields related to linguistics or TESOL.
Ability to teach courses in NMU’s undergraduate General Education program (e.g., first-year composition, humanities, film, mythology, etc.) and the TESOL minor.
Ability to participate in ongoing assessment practices across course, department, and university levels.
Expertise in navigating certification processes related to TESOL and/or ESL programs.
Expertise in Medieval Studies.
