Top Advice

"My biggest piece of advise is to visit as many random offices and departments on campus. Get to know the people who work at NMU - they will also be the people you see around town and at the various community events. Let students (if you are in a student forward position) get to know you. It's ok to remind them that we have lives outside of NMU and likely they'll see us out and about town during their time in Marquette and NMU. "

About Jose G.

Current position
As a CARE Manager, I provide strength-based, holistic programming that supports students in overcoming obstacles and reducing distress. As a non-clinical CARE manager, I am a listening ear to offer guidance in understanding and coping with stress, and can provide the following services to students: Setting SMART goals and advocating to remove barriers to achieving them Expanding student's support by building connections to NMU & community resources Building their tools and skills for complete wellbeing
Main motivation
Over the years of being at NMU, I've enjoyed what feels like a private college atmosphere with the public university resources. Many of my friends that I've made over the years are or were NMU faculty and staff. I also appreciate that many staff and faculty are on a first name basis, and when students see/hear that, it makes many of our roles seems less intimidating to them and makes us more approachable.

Greatest achievement
Honestly, my biggest achievement is that I've been able to work at NMU for over 20 years and I still get excited to come to work to help out our students! I've worked in a variety of offices here... Residence Life, Admissions, Academic Advising and now as a CARE Manager with our WellBeing team. Getting to make connections with students and help guide them throughout their journey is very rewarding.
